Rain Barrels
There are many reasons why you should install a rain barrel.
Here are 4 of them:
• Reduce flooding in your yard or basement
• Save money on your water bills
• Provide your plants with untreated water. Rain water does not contain minerals, chlorine, fluoride and other chemicals
• Help the environment by reducing the amount of water that rushes into city sewage systems and nearby streams
Once you decide to get a rain barrel there are some things to keep in mind. You should place your rain barrel near a downspout so you can easily tap into the water supply with a downspout diverter. You should also consider elevating your rain barrel so you can place a bucket under the spigot at the bottom of the barrel. You can use cinder blocks, pavers or stones or you can build a small platform to put your rain barrel on. You should keep the cover firmly in place on your rain barrel to keep algae from growing and to keep out mosquitoes and other bugs. Keep your filter clean and inspect your rain barrel every once in a while for leaks. You should also keep your gutters clean and make sure water is flowing freely through the downspout as it drains from the roof. Your downspout diverter should revert water back through the downspout when your rain barrel is full to avoid flooding.
